Crucify the flesh.
Live by the Spirit.
We are called to fast.
But like many practices outlined in scripture, the western church has deprioritized fasting as a necessary part of the Christian life.
Fasting isn't optional — it's essential.
When You Fast exists to change that and help guide Christians in cultivating a consistent, fruitful lifestyle of fasting.
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others…”
✦“But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret.” — Matthew 6:16-18

✦Choose Your Fast
Select a fasting plan and draw closer to God through the discipline of dying to the flesh:
A single day of fasting — sunrise to sunrise. Ideal for those beginning their fasting journey or seeking focused time in prayer.
Three days of fasting and prayer modeled after Queen Esther’s call to her people before approaching the king.
Ten days of eating only vegetables and water, following Daniel’s example of faithfulness and obedience in Babylon.
Twenty-one days of partial fasting and persistent prayer, modeled after Daniel’s three weeks of mourning before God.
The ultimate fast — forty days following the pattern of Moses on Sinai, Elijah’s journey, and Jesus in the wilderness.

Stories of Transformation
Even with the uncertainty of fasting since I had never done it before and being unsure of what to expect, God’s posture wasn’t “you must do this right and long enough and then if you’re good enough I might speak to you.” As soon as I said “yes” to God in committing to this fast, He spoke.
I felt a deeper appreciation for the miracle of how God designed our bodies and felt a stronger desire to care for it with intention and respect. It made me wonder why I ever ate anything unhealthy just for the pleasure of it. I also felt more aware about everything and could see how this prepared anyone for worship, prayer and study of Gods word.
You might wonder if 10 days can change your life and after completing the Daniel Fast my answer is YES. When the stomach is only processing fruits and vegetables you can see and feel the improved digestion/detoxification. After the caffeine and sugar withdrawals finally subsided I experienced incredible mental clarity in decision making for the work day. (You have no choice but to pray for these first couple of days if you love coffee like I do) Finally the weight loss (it will require habit change moving forward) and better sleep made a world of difference in how I looked and felt. Pray better, sleep better, feel better, and connect with God… it’s a wonder we don’t do these things more often.
What started as a physical reset became something much deeper. I learned just how mentally tough I can be when I choose to fuel my body with the nutrients it truly needs, not just what it craves. More importantly, I found myself drawing closer to God each day. Whenever I felt low on energy or tempted to give in, I leaned on Him to carry me through… when we put God first and trust Him with our discipline, He meets us with clarity, strength, and a deeper connection to His purpose. This fast reminded me that true strength comes not from willpower alone, but from surrendering our weakness to God and letting Him be our source.
